Canada Tightens Foreign Student Visa Policy

Canada has recently implemented measures to restrict the influx of foreign students. This includes doubling the financial requirement for student visas from CAD$10,000 to CAD$20,635, and introducing a 35% reduction in the number of student visas issued, along with setting province-specific limits. Additionally, the Canadian government is addressing the issue of “puppy mills,” educational institutions offering substandard education to foreign students. British Columbia and Ontario are particularly focused on tackling these institutions. B.C.’s Minister Selina Robinson criticized some private post-secondary institutions for deceptive practices, such as false promises of in-class instruction and housing.

The article also touches on the notion that not all foreign students are innocent victims in these scenarios, suggesting that some may be complicit in these arrangements as they provide pathways to employment.
